A Little About Mark

Hello.. it's me, Mark. (A little about me)

I was born lucky, smiling, and blessed with an incredible knack for waffling on about life, joy, and everything. I’m joyfully married, with two brilliant (and occasionally stroppy) children who, alongside a close circle of friends, keep me grounded and thriving in my wonderfully weird disabled life.

My journey took a sharp turn in 2007 when I was officially diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, though, in hindsight, the signs had been there for years. At the time, I was building a fulfilling career at Dixons Retail (now Dixons Carphone), and thanks to their unwavering support, I could continue working in a rewarding and challenging role for several years.

These days, my professional life is a glorious jumble of meaningful projects. I am proud to be the Head of Communications for Shift. ms, a fantastic charity for MSers that connects people, creates impactful films, and fosters a supportive community. Beyond that, I collaborate on PR and branding projects with my brilliant friend Hamish Thompson, mentor some incredibly special individuals, and take to the stage as a wheelchair public speaker with an unapologetically happy demeanor.

My work doesn’t stop there—I also help curate thought-provoking TEDx Kingston events and, when time allows, overshare my musings on Twitter and LinkedIn.

When I’m not working, you’ll likely find me playing Wheelchair Rugby for the Bournemouth Lions, where I’m slow, weak, and delightfully at least the sixth prettiest on the team. I also spend time at the Chilterns MS Centre in Buckinghamshire, benefiting from therapies, the camaraderie of wonderful people, and, of course, cake.

I’m passionate about raising awareness and funds for MS, not just for my generation but for those to come. My fundraising often involves harebrained schemes like falling out of planes, but hey, it’s all for a good cause.

Beyond that, I’ve been fortunate to gain media coverage, with my story and work featured in numerous outlets, and I enjoy sharing insights through my own blog and recommending others I love.

Life with MS isn’t without its challenges, but with family, friends, a fantastic community, and a good sense of humor, I plod on—lucky and smiling as ever.

Jim Loerch (aka Rock): A True Changemaker and Advocate for Inclusion

We are honored to recognize Jim Loerch as one of our extraordinary Changemakers. Jim’s lifelong dedication to serving others and advocating for the disabled community reflects his deep commitment to creating a more inclusive and equitable world. His actions, both in his professional and personal life, embody the courage and compassion that drive real change.

Jim’s remarkable journey began in the U.S. Navy, where he demonstrated extraordinary bravery and selflessness. As an aviator, Jim once flew a damaged plane back to safety, refusing to let his crew be placed in danger. His unwavering sense of responsibility and leadership in the face of adversity is a testament to his character and devotion to protecting those around him.

After his time in the Navy, Jim continued his mission of advocacy by standing up for those who needed a voice. Whether championing the rights of individuals with disabilities or supporting his community, Jim has consistently worked to break barriers and foster understanding. His efforts remind us that true leadership is about service, empathy, and action.

As a Changemaker, Jim’s legacy of bravery and advocacy inspires us all to push forward in the fight for inclusion. His story serves as a powerful reminder that courage and compassion can transform lives and create a better future for everyone.

We are proud to celebrate Jim Loerch’s incredible contributions and honor his unwavering commitment to empowering others. Thank you, Jim, for your service, your advocacy, and your dedication to making the world a safer, more inclusive place.

Little about Jim aka "Rock"

James "Jim" Loerch also known as "Rock", his call sign, is a living testament to the strength of the human spirit, a man whose life has been defined by service, sacrifice, and an unwavering sense of duty. Rising from the rank of E1 to Commander in the U.S. Navy, Jim served with distinction for decades, dedicating his career to protecting others and advancing the frontiers of aviation and electronic warfare. A proud member of the EA-6B Prowler squadron, Jim flew missions in one of the most specialized and dangerous aircraft in the Navy’s arsenal. The Prowler, an unarmed plane, relied on speed, skill, and precision to evade radar and jam enemy systems, often flying at perilously low altitudes. For Jim, each mission was a calculated risk, a selfless commitment to ensuring the safety of others.

Throughout his military career, Jim served in multiple wars and conflicts, including some of the most challenging theaters of operation. His role in electronic warfare was crucial, paving the way for mission success by neutralizing enemy defenses. The dangers he faced were immense, yet he repeatedly rose to the challenge, sacrificing his body to protect his country and his team. Jim’s heroism was not without its toll, but his resolve never wavered.

Jim's accomplishments as a pilot are legendary. He broke multiple flight records during his service, many of which still stand today, a reflection of his unparalleled skill, determination, and courage. These records are not just numbers; they are symbols of his dedication to pushing the limits of what was thought possible. His peers and superiors alike recognized him as a trailblazer, someone who inspired others to reach for greatness.

Even after retiring from active duty, Jim’s spirit of service remained undiminished. He transitioned to a civilian career in systems engineering, contributing his expertise to the defense industry. His work continued to reflect the same meticulous attention to detail and commitment to excellence that defined his military career.

Now facing the challenges of Lewy body dementia (LBD), Jim approaches this battle with the same resilience and optimism that carried him through decades of service. LBD, a neurological condition marked by cognitive decline, movement difficulties, and visual hallucinations, is particularly common among military pilots, likely due to prolonged exposure to chemicals, high-stress environments, and other occupational hazards. Despite this, Jim remains an inspiring example of how to live fully and meaningfully in the face of adversity.

He continues to read, learn, and stay as active as possible, finding joy in the moments he shares with his family, his four children and seven grandchildren. To them, he is not just a hero in uniform but a hero in life. He teaches them that challenges are meant to be faced head-on, with courage and grace. Through his actions, Jim demonstrates that life’s worth is not measured by the obstacles we encounter but by how we overcome them.

Jim’s story is one of extraordinary sacrifice and resilience. He has given his body and his health to protect others, leaving a legacy of courage and commitment that will inspire generations to come. Even now, as he battles the effects of LBD, he leads by example, showing that strength is not just about physical ability but about the determination to live with purpose and positivity. Jim Loerch remains a beacon of hope, a reminder that even in the face of life’s greatest challenges, we can continue to inspire, achieve, and make a difference.
